I believe that the past is meant to be learned from and not wallowed in. That is easier said than done for some situations. Sure you’ll never forget what has happened in the past, but dwelling on it can be harmful to the present. We have to allow ourselves to move forward for the sake of good mental health. If someone has wronged you, tell them and then let it go. Holding on to the offense negatively affects you and not the one who has offended you. They go on with their lives while you’re stuck in the past dwelling on something that causes your blood pressure to rise. I’ve done this many times. Something reminds me about the offense and then I let my mind wander on what happened and how it made me feel. Then before I know it I’m angry all over again over something that happened years ago. I had to learn to stop those thoughts and change the conversation in my mind. If the thought was a painful one, then I would distract myself by doing something that occupied my mind like watching something positive on tv or listening to music (something uplifting, not sad songs). I was allowing negativity into my life by dwelling on the past. I had to replace that with positive thoughts.
We have enough to deal with and focus on in this present moment. Why allow yourself to be tormented by your past? There is nothing that you can do to change what happened in the past. We have got to focus on the present. Life goes on and I don’t want to miss what’s going on right now because I’m focused on what’s already happened. In order to heal and grow you have to move on. Forgive those who have wronged you; not for them, but for you. Forgive yourself for what you have done to others or to yourself; for you, for them, and for those who love you. God wants us to live free from bondage. Forgiveness is freeing; try it, you’ll see😊.
You also block your own blessings by not forgiving others. God’s word says to forgive and you will be forgiven for your transgressions (Matthew 6: 14-15). That’s something to think about.
