Learning from the Past

Following God's Lead

You may have heard that dwelling on the past is not a good idea. I believe that this is true but that there are some exceptions. Dwelling on the past can cause unnecessary stress over things that can’t be changed simply because we can’t change the past. However, learning from the past is an exception related to thinking about the past.

Thinking about past events for the purpose of not repeating unhealthy choices is an example of an exception. The goal should be to grow in a positive way and improve ourselves so that we can be our best selves. It is wise to understand what didn’t work well in the past so that changes can be made going forward. I believe that it is a sign of maturity when you can examine yourself, acknowledge your flaws, and work on improving yourself based on what you’ve learned from your past.

Looking at your past to improve yourself is one thing but looking at how God has helped you and others in the past is important too. When we think back on the things that God has done it gives us hope and encouragement when things aren’t going well in our lives. There are so many examples in the Bible about God helping people get through situations and issues. These are past events that we can learn from. These examples help strengthen my faith and remind me to be patient especially when I’m going through things. I look at examples in my own life of how God has helped me, and that gives me encouragement. I would also encourage you to take a look at some of the examples in the Bible. That’s what they’re there for; to encourage us.

“For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.” (Romans 15:4)
