The Holy Spirit helps us in several ways. One of those ways is guiding us and giving us direction. The key is listening for this direction and then following it. Sometimes we miss what is being said because of distractions like our own will, fear, advice from others, societal norms, or stress, just to name a few.
How will you know the idea or thought is from the Holy Spirit, and it’s not your own thought? The Holy Spirit will never have you do something that contradicts the word of God. Though, there are thoughts that don’t contradict God’s word that can still not be from the Holy Spirit. For example, wondering if you should take a job that you’ve applied for. Did you consult God about this job? You may be qualified for this job, but it may not be the right job for you. Discernment is important and it will help you in this situation and many others. Ask God for discernment and remove the distractions. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you and hear what the Holy Spirit is saying to you.
“And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” Romans 12:2
“A man’s heart deviseth his way: But the Lord directeth his steps.” Proverbs 16:9
